Cher's Daughter Chastity Undergoing Sex Change to become Chaz

Chastity Bono, the daughter of entertainers Cher and the late Sonny Bono, is undergoing a sex change. A rep for Bono says she began the sex change shortly after celebrating her 40th birthday in March.

“Yes, its true – Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity,” Howard Bragman tells TMZ. “He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago. We ask that the media respect Chaz's privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time.”

The political and social activist first decided to tell her parents she was gay in 1987. Sonny accepted her choice but Cher struggled with it and banished Chastity from her Manhattan apartment. In 1995, she officially came out to the media and posed on the cover of gay magazine The Advocate. She got involved with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and Cher finally accepted her sexuality.
