Adam Lambert shocked American Music Awards viewers with his sexually suggestive performance of his first single "For Your Entertainment." Lambert took the stage with at least a dozen dancers dressed in bondage outfits. He simulated oral sex with one dancer, grabbed the crotch of another, kissed his male keyboardist and ended with giving the cameras the finger.
Backstage after the performance, Lambert defended himself to Rolling Stone magazine. The 26-year-old said if ABC cut any part of the performance for the West Coast airing it would be a form of “discrimination.”
“If it’s gonna be edited, then in a way that's discrimination. I don't mean to get political, but Madonna, Britney and Christina weren't edited," he said. "It’s a shame. Female entertainers have been risqué for years. Honestly, there's a huge double standard."
“It’s a shame because I think that there’s a double standard going on in the entertainment community right now. Female performers have been doing this for years — pushing the envelope about sexuality — and the minute a man does it, everybody freaks out. We’re in 2009; it’s time to take risks, be a little more brave, time to open people’s eyes and if it offends them, then maybe I’m not for them,” Lambert said.
Lambert added that the performance was designed to “promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”
For the West Coast airing, ABC kept the kiss and cut away from the simulated oral sex.
